Fu places thunder within the earth: beneath five yin lines, a single yang line has reappeared at the very bottom — the winter solstice of the hexagrams, the shortest day that is also light's first day of return. Fu means coming back, recovery, beginning again. The oracle says: 'the way goes back and forth; on the seventh day comes return' — the cycle has its own rhythm, and what departs must come home. The most moving line is the first: 'returning from not far away, no cause for regret — supreme good fortune.' Turning back soon after straying, before real damage is done, is the best luck there is.
Drawing Fu means the turning point has arrived: the trough is passing, and a thin new shoot of vitality has just broken the surface — a thawing message, a fresh lead, the first hint of recovered energy. The skill now is nurturing, not forcing: newborn yang is still fragile, so grow it gently and advance in small steps rather than piling weight on the sprout. Fu is also the hexagram of self-correction: if you know you drifted off course, turning back now costs the least it ever will. Give the new beginning quiet room, and its momentum will build by itself.
In love, it favors thaw and reunion: a cooled relationship warming again, or an old connection resurfacing — proceed tenderly, repair the daily rhythm first, and do not excavate every old wound at once. If reconciling, honestly check whether the original sticking point has truly changed. In career, restart what was shelved: the paused project, the interrupted study, the field you want to return to — heaven's timing now favors it, beginning with a small pilot. Money begins to recover; rebuild financial health first — debts and savings — before new ventures.
Fu says: no road is truly unreturnable — there are only people unwilling to turn around. After the solstice, each day is a little brighter, and so is your turning point: small, but the direction has changed. Shelter that newborn light, and when you stray, come back early. This is the gentlest good fortune in the I Ching.
