Hexagram 41 · Sun (Decrease)

Hexagram 41, Decrease, teaches principled subtraction: give up the lesser to secure the greater. Learn why a sincere decrease can be supremely fortunate.

The Image and Its Meaning

Sun places the mountain above the lake: the lake gives up some of its depth as mist and moisture that nourish the mountain's height — decrease below, increase above. Sun means to lessen, to give, to let go. Yet the oracle is unexpectedly radiant: 'Decrease combined with sincerity brings supreme good fortune.' Even 'two small bowls suffice for the offering' — sincerity outweighs ceremony, and the trimmings can go. The commentary turns it inward: the wise person 'controls anger and restrains desire' — the first things worth decreasing are your own temper and craving. The deep logic: deliberate, well-aimed subtraction exists to let what matters most increase.

When It Appears in a Reading

Drawing Sun means your matter follows the pattern 'reduce first, gain after': something will likely need giving up — time, money, face, an option you are fond of — and if the subtraction points the right way, it buys a larger position. Three tests. Sincerity: a grudging sacrifice only banks resentment; the decrease must be honest to work. Direction: cut at the joint — shed desire, redundancy, and secondary aims while guarding the root. Moderation: the lines note that decreasing the strong has its proper season and measure — cutting into your own foundation defeats the purpose. Often the hexagram is simply pointing at the real target: what most needs decreasing right now is your anger and your appetite.

Love, Career, and Money

In love, measured concession is today's lubricant: forfeit the scoreboard of one argument, bend your plans a little for the other person — sincerity like that is felt. But endless one-sided self-sacrifice is not what Sun means: giving must flow both ways to count as 'decrease with sincerity.' In career, subtraction wins: cut the side quests that scatter your energy, decline non-core commitments, simplify the process — focus concentrates power, and a short-term sacrifice that buys long-term position is a good trade. Financially: never skimp on what compounds (learning, health, key relationships) and never spend on what merely performs (status purchases, doubling down on sunk costs). Generosity given rightly returns by other roads.

A Gentle Reminder

Sun redefines loss as a form of investment: two plain bowls offered sincerely outweigh a table of empty ritual. Decrease anger and craving first, then the clutter and the dead weight. Anyone can do life's addition; it is the subtractors who go far. And whatever survives the decrease — that is what was real.
