Hexagram 49 · Ge (Revolution)

Hexagram 49, Revolution, sets fire inside the lake — two forces that must transform each other. Learn when change is legitimate, how to time it, and how to carry people along.

The Image and Its Meaning

Ge places fire within the lake: water striving to quench fire, fire striving to boil water — two forces that cannot coexist unchanged, so transformation must come. The word originally means an animal hide tanned into leather: remaking an old material into a new one. The classic elevates change to cosmic rank: 'heaven and earth revolutionize, and the four seasons complete themselves' — and the great human revolutions succeeded because they 'accorded with heaven and responded to the people.' The oracle adds the timing rule: 'on your own day, you are believed' — a revolution is trusted not at announcement, but after the right day arrives and results appear.

When It Appears in a Reading

Drawing Ge means your matter has reached the point where not changing is no longer viable: the old model, system, or pattern is visibly out of season, and patching will not save it — the signal calls for structural change. The lines read like an operations manual. Ripeness first: the opening line binds itself with yellow oxhide — before the moment matures, hold absolutely still. Legitimacy second: 'when change is fitting, regret vanishes' — change for its own sake breeds remorse. Trust third: hearts take time; trade early wins for larger mandates. Appearance fourth: 'the great man changes like a tiger, the superior man like a leopard' — the reformer must be visibly renewed, the new pattern showing in their very stripes; and from the broader crowd, a change of face — cooperation with the new direction — is enough to ask.

Love, Career, and Money

In love, the relationship needs a genuine upgrade: when the same problem keeps returning, it is the old pattern that must be revolutionized — write new rules together (how you communicate, spend time, hold boundaries), changing the skin rather than the person; and if the substance itself has failed, Ge includes the courage of farewell. In career, transformation is in season: reorganizations, business-model renewals, personal pivots all catch the current — but follow the manual: timing, legitimacy, early results, new face, each step buying the next round of trust. Financially, replace the old: restructure holdings, cut obsolete positions — and keep extra cash through the transition, for change always costs more than budgeted.

A Gentle Reminder

Ge supports change while setting its bar plainly: accord with heaven, respond to people, and let your own day prove you. With timing, legitimacy, and trust assembled, the tiger's transformation becomes a spectacle of nature; force it with one missing, and revolution decays into churn. Tan the old hide into new leather — remembering always that the point is to let the life underneath grow better.
