The Chariot, card 7 of the Major Arcana, stands for willpower, forward motion and control. Explore its symbolism, upright and reversed meanings, and readings for love, career and money.
A young warrior crowned with a star stands in a stone chariot, crescent moons on his shoulders, two sphinxes—one black, one white—crouched before him, facing opposite ways yet both under his command. He holds no reins; his will alone drives them. The canopy is strewn with stars, and the square on his chest anchors him to the earth. The card is about uniting the forces pulling you apart into one forward motion.
Upright, the Chariot means forward motion, willpower, victory and control. Lock onto your goal, clear the distractions, and push—you can break through. This is pure momentum: not a time for hesitation. Gather your scattered attention, master your emotions and desires the way the charioteer masters his sphinxes, and victory lies along the road of advance.
Reversed, the Chariot warns of lost control, unclear direction, obstruction or over-competitiveness. Your direction has scattered or you're forcing it; steady the reins and re-aim. Two forces may be pulling you in different directions and draining you—or the hunger to win is making you reckless. Pausing to recalibrate gets you there faster than blind acceleration.
In love, upright favours making the first move and stating your intentions—things can progress; reversed, notice if winning has become more important than loving, or if your paces are pulling against each other. In career, upright is a sprint phase—projects advance and targets are within reach; reversed, resolve the disagreement about direction before charging on. With money, upright earns through decisive action; reversed, avoid investments driven by the need to win.
The Chariot's reins are not in your hands but in your heart. Ask yourself: are my two sphinxes—reason and desire—facing the same way right now? Align first, then go full speed.
