Lü places fire atop the mountain: a wildfire moving across the slopes — burning here, moving on, never settling. That is the wanderer: traveling, sojourning, operating away from your home ground. The oracle sets modest expectations: 'the wanderer — success in small things; perseverance brings good fortune.' A guest under another's roof should not plan grand conquests. The classic names the craft: 'the yielding holds the center abroad and defers to the strong' — respect the local powers and rules. And the commentary adds one essential habit: be clear-minded and careful, and once a matter is settled, do not linger in it — a traveler keeps no prisons.
Drawing Lü means you are playing an away game: a new environment, new company, foreign territory — anywhere the rules are not yours and your roots are shallow. Four survival laws. Lower the volume: 'small success' is the right target on the road — do not rush to prove yourself or outshine the locals. Secure your provisions: one line has the wanderer reaching an inn with his means intact — settle your lodging and your resources (and your way home) first, for these are a traveler's lifeline. Start no quarrels: the pettily contentious traveler 'draws down calamity on himself,' and the top line's bird watches its own nest burn — arrogance abroad costs you the very branch you perch on. Befriend the locals: the modest traveler 'wins a loyal servant' — respect the people and customs of the place, and they become your guides.
In love — long-distance, a new relationship, or entering your partner's world (meeting the family, joining their circle) — be the gracious guest: observe much, respect much, critique little of their world; and while the relationship is still in its traveling phase, do not demand settled-resident commitments — walk each station well first. In career, a new job, an overseas posting, or a market entry are all Lü situations: integrate before you perform, treat the first months as the season for learning the house rules, and prove yourself by results rather than noise. Financially, play conservatively on foreign ground: small stakes only in unfamiliar markets, protect your traveling capital — and the old rule holds literally: on the road, do not flash your wealth.
Lü teaches the art of being a guest: gentle without groveling, careful without cowering. Remember the hill-fire — however brightly it burns, the mountain is not its own.
