Dui is the lake doubled — one of the eight pure hexagrams: 'two lakes joined,' each replenishing the other. Dui means joy, affability, the mouth and exchange. The commentary names joy's finest use: 'the wise person joins with friends for discussion and practice' — learning together being the most mutually nourishing of pleasures. The classic states joy's politics: when people are glad of heart, they forget their toil; glad of heart, they brave difficulty forgetting death. But Dui grades joy strictly: the oracle requires it to be upright, and the lines sort it — harmonious joy and sincere joy bring fortune; 'coming joy' (ingratiating pleasure that approaches with an agenda) and seduced joy bring danger.
