Temperance, card 14 of the Major Arcana, embodies balance, blending and well-measured patience. Explore its symbolism, upright and reversed meanings, and readings for love, career and money.
A great angel stands between water and land, one foot in the stream, one on the bank, pouring water between two golden cups—and the water seems to flow against gravity. A sun sign marks the angel's brow, a square holding a triangle rests on the chest, and behind, a path winds toward a distant crown of light on the mountains. The whole card is about blending: mixing two seemingly opposing things into exactly the right proportion.
Upright, Temperance means balance, blending, patience and moderation. Find the measured middle and blend things gently—slow and steady is actually surest. It applies wherever things need diluting to taste: work and life, head and heart, fast and slow. No strong medicine is needed now, just fine adjustments over time; your patience is slowly refining chaos into order.
Reversed, Temperance warns of imbalance, extremes, impatience and discord. Your pace or mood has tipped—too rushed or too extreme; dial the rhythm back. One side of life may be overweight (work, emotion, spending), or two camps refuse to blend. First admit the current recipe is off, then adjust in small measures rather than flipping the whole table.
In love, upright shows two people gradually finding the same rhythm—the adjusting is paying off; reversed, watch the drain of one running hot while the other runs cold. In career, upright favours cross-team coordination and integrating resources, advancing steadily; reversed, fix the imbalance in the team or in yourself before sprinting. With money, upright suits balanced allocation and steady flows; reversed, avoid extreme bets and revenge spending.
Temperance isn't suppression—it's seasoning. Life tastes right not because one flavour dominates, but because the proportions are true. It can't be rushed and can't be left bland. Blend slowly, and you'll get it.
